Reflection
- Describe the correlation is between earthquakes and volcanoes in terms of the Theory of Plate Tectonics.
Plate tectonics is the driving force behind earthquakes and volcanoes, it is the entire reason that we deal with both of them today. From plate boundaries, we get the different pressures and energy buildup when finally maxed out at their limit, explode and roar into these landscape shifting forces that humans deal with on a daily basis around the globe. Another important note, is that plate tectonics is responsible for much more than just these two problems, an endless list of disasters could be compiled as a result of this action.
- Analyze the spatial relationship and distribution that exists with these forces of nature.
The spatial relation in these forces is very similar in location, inhabiting much of the same space, because they are caused by the same factors. Especially, in the example of earthquake-volcano distribution in the “Ring of Fire”, we are able to see the direct correlation that these have with one another. Knowing this, and understanding the mechanics behind these beasts, we can formulate good ideas of what to expect when one of these forces takes place and how it will effect surrounding members.
- Describe what you learned about earthquakes and volcanoes that you did not know before this course.
I did not learn a whole lot of new information, this is only because I have taken similar courses in this field before, so much of it was review. One aspect that I did find intriguing, however, was the efforts being made by scientists to try and predict when these forces would occur. Although 100% forecasting is still in the far future, there are many promising theories being tested today, to try and decrease the amount of catastrophe that comes with these forces.
- How has this helped shift your worldview about natural disasters now that you have a strong scientific understanding of the concept?
If I ever live in one of the communities that has problems with these issues, I will know how to better keep myself and others safe. Whether it is from the type of house construction that I live in, or simply where in the valley is going to experience worse disaster, when disaster occurs. It has also opened my eyes, of the magnitude of power that these forces carry, and how they can have a major effect on any life, especially human life, if they happen in the right places.
